Bull Creek Carpentry Branding

Bull Creek Carpentry sought to establish a distinct brand identity to reflect their commitment to simplicity, craftsmanship, and innovation. My task was to design a logo that would encapsulate their ethos while appealing to both residential and commercial clients giving a high percieved value and professional finish.

Objectives

  • Brand Recognition: Create a logo that stands out in the crowded carpentry market.
  • Craftsmanship Reflection: The design should convey the simplicity, meticulous craftsmanship and attention to detail Bull Creek Carpentry is known for.
  • California Heritage: The owners are from California and have a distinct attachment to and personality that flows from the uniqueness of skateboarding and SoCal culture.
  • Versatility: Ensure the logo works effectively across various mediums, from business cards to large signage, to embroidery, to hats and shirts.

Design Process

Research:

  • Market Analysis: Studied competitors' branding to identify gaps and opportunities for differentiation.
  • Client Interview: Gained insights into their philosophy, client base, and unique selling propositions.
  • Material Study: Researched types of tools used in carpentry for symbolic inspiration.

2. Conceptualization:

  • Brainstorming: Sketched numerous ideas, focusing on elements like wood grains, tools, leaves (for sustainability), and custom fonts that evoke craftsmanship.
  • Mood Board: Created a visual board with images of wood textures, nature, skate, surf, and minimalist icons and design aesthetics.

3. Design Development:

  • Iteration: Explored various versions, adjusting color schemes, typography, and iconography.
    • Version 1: A circle with silhouette of a bull and creek.
    • Version 2: A “B” and “C” letter lockup.
    • Version 3: The final concept featured a bold stylized "B” and reversed “C”. This design, when vertical, is a “b” and backwards “c” combo. When it rotates it forms a stylized mitre-saw or rotates the other way to form a stylized ocean sunset (see below) which both connect the logo to carpentry and California.

4. Refinement:

  • Feedback Loop: Presented initial concepts to the client, incorporating their feedback for fine-tuning.
  • Color Choice: Settled on black/white and bright red/orange pop-color.
  • Typography: Selected a font that is simple, clean and professional while maintaining readability.

Results

  • Brand Launch: The new logo will be rolled out across all marketing materials, including website, business cards, stickers, vehicle wraps, and shirts.
  • Customer Feedback: Clients noted a positive change in brand perception, appreciating the emphasis on craftsmanship and professionalism.
  • Business Growth: There was an uptick in inquiries, particularly from commercial clients attributing this growth to the rebranding.

Conclusion

The Bull Creek Carpentry logo project was a deep dive into merging traditional craft with modern branding. The design not only met but exceeded expectations, helping Bull Creek Carpentry carve out a unique identity in a competitive market. This case study showcases how thoughtful design can align perfectly with brand values, driving recognition and growth.
